RSL falls at Seattle to suffer first loss
May 31, 2014 - 10:05 PM Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Real Salt Lake suffered its first league loss of the season on Saturday as the club received a 4-0 thumping from Seattle Sounders FC at CenturyLink Field. The Claret and Cobalt, who were without several key players due to international duty, entered the weekend with no defeats through their first 12 regular season games of the campaign, but three goals in the span of 20 minutes of action from the Sounders left Jeff Cassar's men with no way back.
There was little in the way of scoring opportunities in the first half, but Seattle managed to break the deadlock just before the interval when Aaron Maund clattered into Lamar Neagle in the box, an infraction that allowed Gonzalo Pineda to smash home the opener on the ensuing penalty.
The Sounders emerged from halftime and managed to double their advantage within 10 minutes of the restart as Marco Pappa netted his first goal for the club from a superb free kick in the 55th minute.
Seattle added a third seven minutes later when a well-worked counter saw Neagle break free down the right flank and slot a square pass to Chad Barrett. The Sounders striker scuffed his first-time shot but still did enough to get his shot past goalkeeper Jeff Attinella.
The rout was completed in stoppage time when Kenny Cooper served up a low cross that was neatly tucked home by Obafemi Martins.
Real Salt Lake (6-1-6) stays on 24 points for the season to slip five points back of first-place Seattle (9-3-2).
