Espindola misses PK as United settles for draw with Crew
Jun 8, 2014 - 12:50 AM Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Fabian Espindola failed to score from the penalty spot deep in stoppage time, forcing D.C. United to settle for a 0-0 draw with the Columbus Crew at FedEx Field on Saturday. The match really picked up late in the second half, but both goalkeepers did well to keep their respective sides level.
However, in the dying moments of the game, Crew defender Bernardo Anor was called for a handball inside his own penalty area, giving Espindola the chance to win the game for United from the spot.
Espindola had already scored seven goals on the season, but he will have to wait for his eighth as he floated a terrible kick straight down the middle at goalkeeper Steve Clark.
Clark kept out the best chance of the first half for either side with a big save on United's Eddie Johnson, while Ben Speas went close for the Crew with 20 minutes to play after being set up by Justin Meram.
United goalkeeper Bill Hamid made a fine diving stop on Crew substitute Adam Bedell in the 83rd, while Clark kept out a strong effort from Jared Jeffrey a few minutes later.
Espindola had the chance to play hero in the dying moments, but his poor effort prevented United from moving to the top of the Eastern Conference.
