Morales salvages draw for Whitecaps against Union

Jun 8, 2014 - 1:06 AM Chester, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Pedro Morales foiled a furious comeback by the Philadelphia Union as he scored from the penalty spot in the 81st minute to help Vancouver Whitecaps FC earn a 3-3 draw at PPL Park.

Vancouver went up 2-0 in the first half through goals from Erik Hurtado and Nicolas Mezquida, but the Union answered with three goals in the span of eight minutes in the second half to take a 3-2 lead, including two goals from Conor Casey.

But the Whitecaps battled back for a point when Darren Mattocks was taken down inside the penalty area by Union goalkeeper Zac MacMath, allowing Morales to score the equalizer from the spot.

The goal extended Vancouver's unbeaten streak to seven games, while the Union has taken four points from their last four matches.

Nigel Reo-Coker set up the first goal with a right-wing cross that picked out an open Hurtado in front of goal for a simple headed finish.

Hurtado then turned provider in the 41st minute when he danced past a defender inside the area and pulled the ball back to Mezquida, who beat MacMath from close range.

The Union got back into the game in the 63rd when Cristian Maidana's cross was redirected home at the near post by Casey, while Sebastien Le Toux leveled the contest five minutes later when he arrived at the back post to score off a cross from Vincent Nogueira.

Casey scored on a wonderful strike from outside the area in the 71st to put the Union in front, but Morales was handed the chance 10 minutes later to equalize for the Whitecaps, and he made no mistake.
