Quick strikes see Rapids past 'Caps

Jun 29, 2014 - 3:02 AM Commerce City, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - The Colorado Rapids struck twice in a span of 16 first-half minutes on Saturday and held out for a 2-0 victory over Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

Dillon Powers opened the scoring in the 20th minute and Vicente Sanchez doubled the advantage in the 36th minute as the Rapids earned their seventh win of the season and improved to 25 points.

Vancouver, meanwhile, struggled to find many quality scoring chances and failed to rebound from their listless scoreless draw with the Montreal Impact at BC place last Wednesday.

Powers opened the scoring for the hosts after 20 minutes when he collected a loose ball in the penalty area and ripped it just inside the far post on the turn with his left foot.

Colorado doubled it advantage in the 36th minute when Whitecaps midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker cleaned out Colorado's Deshorn Brown in the area, resulting in a penalty kick.

Sanchez stepped to the spot and calmly blasted his right-footed strike into the bottom right corner of the net, leaving Whitecaps goalkeeper David Ousted with no chance for a save.

Vancouver created a few quality scoring chances in the second half, but rarely tested Rapids' goalkeeper Clint Irwin, as the 'Caps saw their eight-match unbeaten run in MLS play come to an end.
