Dwyer's late goal leads Sporting past Montreal
Jul 13, 2014 - 1:42 AM Montreal, QC (SportsNetwork.com) - Dominic Dwyer continued his scoring tear on Saturday with a pair of goals, including the winning tally in the 89th minute, of a 2-1 win for Sporting Kansas City over the Montreal Impact at the Stade Saputo.Dwyer opened the scoring after just four minutes for Sporting, but Montreal answered through Marco Di Vaio shortly before the half-hour mark.
But with the match seemingly headed for a draw, Sporting forward C.J. Sapong pressured the Montreal defense into a turnover which led to Dwyer's 14th goal of the campaign to win the match for Kansas City.
Sporting has earned 10 points from its last four matches to close to within two points of Eastern Conference leading D.C. United, while Montreal lost for the second straight time.
A long throw-in from Matt Besler set up Dwyer's goal as the ball was launched into the penalty area for Dwyer to head home past goalkeeper Troy Perkins.
Di Vaio came back with a goal of his own in the 28th as Justin Mapp nodded the ball back into the path of the forward so he could head it past Andy Gruenebaum in the Sporting net.
Gruenebaum produced a nice stop on Felipe Martins to keep the match level, while Perkins kept his side on level terms in the 60th minute with a fine one- handed stop on Toni Dovale, who redirected a low cross from Jacob Peterson on target.
The difference came in the closing minutes as Sapong's pressure led to a turnover in Montreal's defensive third, leaving Perkins out of position and unable to stop Dwyer's effort.
