Ten-man Sporting tops TFC behind Peterson's goal
Jul 27, 2014 - 1:18 AM Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Jacob Peterson's goal in the 80th minute helped 10-man Sporting Kansas City to a 2-1 comeback win over Toronto FC at BMO Field on Saturday.Jackson fired the hosts into the lead in the 16th minute, while Graham Zusi equalized shortly after halftime. Sporting was reduced to 10 men in the 75th when Matt Besler picked up a second yellow card, but Peterson managed to find the net for the visitors 10 minutes from time.
The result moves Sporting four points clear of second-place D.C. United in the Eastern Conference and is the club's fifth successive victory away from home.
Dominic Oduro was a threat for Toronto throughout the game and he set up the opening tally by slipping a through ball into the penalty area for Jackson, who rounded goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum and slotted his shot home.
The hosts then had two great chances to extend their advantage as Nick Hagglund saw his header strike the post while Oduro beat Gruenebaum with a shot at his near post that crashed off the woodwork.
Sporting was fortunate to be down by just a goal at halftime, and the team picked up its play after the break with Zusi taking advantage of some sloppy defending from Toronto to drive home the equalizer in the 48th minute.
Oduro spurned a good chance for TFC in the 66th when he shot over the net from a dangerous position, while he drew a foul on Besler in the 75th that resulted in the Sporting defender collecting a second yellow card.
Doneil Henry almost put Toronto back on top in the 77th with a header that just cleared the crossbar, but Sporting snatched the lead in the 80th when Dom Dwyer's back heel found Peterson, who beat goalkeeper Joe Bendik.
The hosts had a good chance in the closing minutes to claim a point as Michael Bradley's shot from the top of the box skipped just past the post, leaving TFC empty-handed.
