Finlay's late strike hands Revs another defeat
Jul 27, 2014 - 1:43 AM Foxborough, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Ethan Finlay's 84th-minute goal doomed the New England Revolution to an eighth straight defeat on Saturday as the strike lifted the Columbus Crew to a 2-1 win at Gillette Stadium.Federico Higuain scored on a brilliant free kick shortly before halftime, but the Revs were in position to claim a point after A.J. Soares scored in the 50th minute.
However, Finlay was set up by substitute Justin Meram with six minutes to play, lifting the Crew to a second successive win while New England's woes continue.
Columbus goalkeeper Steve Clark did well to deny Teal Bunbury in the 11th minute, while he kept out a shot from Diego Fagundez in a dangerous position.
Bernardo Anor nearly put the Crew ahead on the half-hour mark when he arrived at the back post but nodded the ball just wide. However, Higuain provided a moment of magic in the 43rd minute when he curled a free kick around the wall and inside the right post beyond the reach of diving goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth.
The hosts clawed their way back into the match in the 50th minute when a corner kick from Kelyn Rowe was turned in at the near post by the head of Soares, leveling the contest at 1-1.
Finlay almost put the Crew back on top six minutes later with a shot that the struck the post, while the visitors had two headers cleared off the goal line by Fagundez as they continued to pressure.
But that pressure finally paid off in the 84th when Meram's through ball was tracked down by Finlay, who powered his shot past Shuttleworth to claim the win.
