Chivas tries to break scoring slump against Revs

Aug 22, 2014 - 4:20 PM Foxborough, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Chivas USA will attempt to snap a lengthy scoring drought and try to climb off the bottom of the Western Conference table on Saturday when the club visits Gillette Stadium to face the New England Revolution.

Chivas has earned just one point from its last five games and has failed to register a goal in its last four contests, which spans 366 minutes.

That scoreless spell is the second longest in MLS this season, and if the Goats are going to have any chance at getting off the bottom of the West, they must find a way to solve their struggles in front of goal.

Last time out Chivas kept a clean sheet against Vancouver but still only managed a 0-0 draw, which snapped a four-game losing streak.

Goalkeeper Dan Kennedy felt his team should have gotten more out of the match, but he also felt as though there were some positives to take going forward.

"I think we will all leave feeling like we should have gotten a little bit more out of tonight," Kennedy said after the draw with the Whitecaps. "But it was nice to just get some type of result. We obviously had a tough four-game stretch so now it's about just continuing to get the guys that are hurt healthy. That's a good performance by the back line tonight, so we can build on this."

Only one player, forward Erick Torres, has managed to score more than two goals for Chivas this season as he leads the club with 14.

But Chivas can't rely on the young Mexican to continue to carry that scoring burden, and the club must hope that another player can emerge to give him some help.

One thing that Chivas has in its favor is a history of recent success against the Revs, who haven't beaten Chivas in the last seven meetings between the two teams.

New England enters Saturday's match very much in the hunt for a playoff spot as the Revs are just one point back of Red Bull New York for the final postseason berth in the Eastern Conference.

The club endured a horrendous eight-game losing streak that dropped them down the table, but four points from the last three games has helped Jay Heaps and his team settle in a bit before the final two months of the season.

Last time out New England took a 1-0 lead against Portland through a 27th- minute goal from Charlie Davies, but allowed the Timbers to come back in the second half through a Liam Ridgewell goal in the 65th minute of a 1-1 draw.

A point isn't a bad result for the Revs, but Heaps felt his team missed a chance to claim the maximum points by failing to put Portland away in the first 45 minutes.

"I thought the game was a little bit of a tale of two halves," Heaps said. "I thought we were there in the first half with the right way we played. Then the second half we let them back and that's disappointing because when you have a team you think you can put away, we've got to start putting them away and we had the chance in the first half."
