Donovan propels Galaxy past DCU
Aug 28, 2014 - 4:32 AM Carson, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Landon Donovan scored a goal and assisted on two others as the Los Angeles Galaxy claimed a 4-1 win over D.C. United at the StubHub Center on Wednesday. The victory is the Galaxy's third straight and it moves the club into second place in the Western Conference, two points back of leaders Seattle.
United, meanwhile, lost for the third time in five games, leaving the team just one point clear of second-place Sporting Kansas City at the top of the East.
Alan Gordon scored just over a minute into the match and Omar Gonzalez added a second goal before another from Baggio Husidic in first-half stoppage time put the home side firmly in control.
An own goal from Leonardo handed United a goal back, but Donovan converted from the penalty spot 15 minutes from time to leave little doubt about the outcome.
A turnover from United's Bobby Boswell led to the opening goal as Gordon was on hand to collect a deflected ball and fire it past goalkeeper Bill Hamid just 67 seconds into the contest.
Los Angeles continued to be the better side and the club doubled its lead from a Donovan corner kick in the 25th minute that Gonzalez stabbed past Hamid.
The Galaxy saved their best goal of the first half for last with the team putting together over 20 passes before A.J. DeLaGarza delivered the final ball that was finished off by Husidic.
The visitors had a long way to go at that point, but they did manage to pull a goal back as Alex Caskey's driven ball into the box was deflected by the Galaxy's Leonardo into his own net.
Hamid made a pair of big saves to keep his team within two goals, but a questionable penalty decision in the 75th handed Donovan a chance from the spot that he easily converted to take any suspense out of the match.
