Casey lifts Union past TFC
Sep 4, 2014 - 1:18 AM Chester, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - A second-half goal from Conor Casey was enough as the Philadelphia Union claimed a 1-0 win over Toronto FC at PPL Park on Wednesday. The win continues a good run of form for the Union, who have won three of their last four games to climb firmly into the playoff mix in the Eastern Conference.
Toronto, meanwhile, has taken just one point from its last four games and was playing for the first time under new head coach Greg Vanney after former boss Ryan Nelsen was fired on Monday.
Casey had the best chance of the first half for the Union as he forced Toronto goalkeeper Joe Bendik to make a diving stop on a shot from inside the area that Bendik tipped past the post.
The TFC netminder was busy again after the break as he made a fine stop to keep out a close-range header from Amobi Okugo.
However, Bendik was picking the ball out of his net in the 55th minute when Sebastien Le Toux was released down the right wing and drove a low ball to the front of goal for Casey, whose first-time redirection settled high into the net.
The Canadian side then had any hope of a comeback snuffed out with 13 minutes to play when defender Ashtone Morgan was sent off for bringing down Le Toux as he attempted to get in on goal, leaving the visitors with 10 men for the remainder of the match.
