Sporting's woes continue following defeat to RBNY
Sep 7, 2014 - 1:58 AM Harrison, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Sporting Kansas City's horrid run of form continued on Saturday as the club suffered a 2-1 defeat at Red Bull New York, its fourth consecutive league loss.Kansas City entered the contest on the back of three straight defeats to Eastern Conference opposition, and things looked bleak after strikes from Bradley Wright-Phillips and Thierry Henry put the hosts two goals to the good.
Dom Dwyer managed to pull one back with plenty of time remaining in the second half, but the Red Bulls held off the reigning MLS Cup champions to extend their unbeaten run on home soil to six games.
New York opened the scoring 11 minutes into the affair after Matt Besler tripped Wright-Phillips with a sliding challenge in the box, which allowed the Englishman to smash home his league-leading 21st goal of the season on the ensuing penalty attempt.
The Red Bulls clung to the lead into the second half before Henry doubled their advantage in the 52nd minute. The Frenchman collected a square pass from Lloyd Sam before beating a defender and unleashing a powerful right-footed shot into the upper corner.
But Sporting managed to answer within two minutes as Seth Sinovic nodded a free kick to the center of the box where Dwyer was waiting to fire home his 18th goal of the campaign with a nifty side-volley.
The match finished with a frantic pace as Sporting searched for an equalizer and New York looked to alleviate the pressure, but the hosts managed to close out the contest with a one-goal lead in tact.
The Red Bulls climb to 34 points on the season, moving them eight points back of second-place Sporting.
