Jones fires Revs past Sporting KC

Sep 27, 2014 - 2:18 AM Kansas City, KS (SportsNetwork.com) - Jermaine Jones scored five minutes from time to lift the New England Revolution to an impressive 3-2 win over Sporting Kansas City on Friday at Sporting Park.

New England did well to capitalize on their chances in the first half as Kelyn Rowe and Jose Goncalves netted goals for the visiting side and Jones hit for the winner late on to propel the Revs into second place in the East with 45 points, ahead of Kansas City via tiebreaker.

Sporting entered the match in desperate need of a good performance, having lost four of their previous five matches, and they collected second-half tallies from Paulo Nagamura and Dominic Dwyer, but were undone by an expert strike from Jones to drop to third in the East with 45 points.

The Revs opened the scoring after 22 minutes as Rowe got on the end of a great cross from Kevin Alston at the back post and slid it home with a composed left-footed finish.

New England doubled its advantage in the 35th minute as Goncalves came galloping down the center of the field. The Sporting defense backed off and Goncalves uncorked a low strike that beat goalkeeper Eric Kronberg to the bottom right corner for a 2-0 lead at the break.

Sporting began its comeback in the 54th minute as Nagamura ran onto an excellent through ball from Kevin Ellis on the right side of the box and beat New England goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth to the top left corner.

Just two minutes later the defending champions came up with an equalizer when Toni lifted a long ball into the box that was nodded back across the face of goal by Nagamura and eventually nodded home by Dwyer for his 20th goal of the season.

But the decisive strike came in the 85th minute as Jones collected a loose ball in midfield. He took a couple touches, picked up his head and smashed it into the bottom right corner for his first goal in a New England kit.
