Ribeiro lifts Union past SKC
Oct 19, 2014 - 1:01 AM Chester, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Pedro Ribeiro came off the bench to net the winning goal at PPL Park on Saturday as the Philadelphia Union claimed a 2-1 win over Sporting Kansas City. The Union were eliminated from postseason contention last weekend, but Ribeiro managed to restore a little bit of pride as his 71st-minute strike granted the hosts their first league win since Sept. 6.
Philadelphia (10-11-12) climbs to sixth place in the Eastern Conference with 42 points while Sporting (14-12-7) remains in third place on 49 points.
The two sides were level until the final minute of the opening period when Cristian Maidana's cross in front of goal was steered home by Brian Brown.
Sporting would eventually climb level after Zac MacMath tripped up Soony Saad in the box, allowing Dom Dwyer to slot home the equalizer from the ensuing penalty in the 53rd minute.
But Ribeiro entered the match in the 69th minute and made an immediate impact, scoring with his first touch of the ball to clinch the win for Philadelphia. Maidana once again provided the assist as his square pass was fired home by Ribeiro from the center of the penalty area for his second goal of the campaign.
