Ortiz's brace powers Toluca past Jaguares

Jan 19, 2015 - 4:44 PM Mexico City, Mexico (SportsNetwork.com) - Richard Ortiz struck twice in a span of six second-half minutes on Sunday as Toluca claimed a comfortable 3-0 victory over Jaguares at the Estadio Nemesio Diez.

After playing to a scoreless draw against Morelia in their Clausura opener last weekend, Toluca hoped to earn their first win of the winter season and they got off to a quick start as Carlos Esquivel fired home the opening goal after just 37 minutes.

Toluca then seized control of the match in the second half as Ortiz doubled the lead in the 73rd minute and netted his second of the match in the 79th minute to hand Toluca its first three-point effort of the season.

The result lifts Toluca into fourth place in the table with four points from its opening two matches. Jaguares, meanwhile, sits in 13th place with three points after two games.

Also in Mexico on Sunday, Marco Fabian and Angel Reyna netted first-half goals to lift Guadalajara to a 2-1 win over Pumas.

On Saturday, Alemao scored in the 53rd minute to hand Cruz Azul a 1-0 win over Santos, while Edwin Cardona Bedoya's goal four minutes from time held up as the winner to give Monterrey a 1-0 victory against Pachuca.

Jose Arturo Rivas netted in the 69th minute to lift Tigres to a 1-0 result over Leon, while Walter Kannemann and Martin Barragan netted second-half goals as Atlas claimed a 2-1 win over Morelia.

On Friday, Dayro Moreno's 42nd-minute strike handed Tijuana a 1-0 result over America, Antonio Naelson's 90th-minute penalty gave Queretaro a 1-0 victory over Leones Negros, while Friday's final fixture saw Julio Cesar Furch score a pair of goals to lead Veracruz to a 3-1 win against Puebla.
