Veracruz tops Toluca to stay unbeaten

Feb 23, 2015 - 4:02 PM Mexico City, Mexico (SportsNetwork.com) - Veracruz remained the only unbeaten team in Liga MX over the weekend with a 3-0 win over Toluca that saw the club score all three of its goals in the second half.

The win leaves Veracruz in fourth place, three points back of leaders Tijuana, while Toluca remains in the bottom half of the league after suffering its second defeat of the campaign.

Following a scoreless first half, Leiton Romero opened the scoring in the 50th minute before Julio Furch doubled the advantage in the 67th for the hosts.

Fernando Meneses then converted a penalty kick 11 minutes from time to seal the win, which is the third of the season for Veracruz.

Tijuana moved to the top of the league after edging Leones Negros, 1-0, through a 12th-minute goal from Gabriel Hauche, while second-place America also earned a 1-0 win away from home as Dario Benedetto scored the lone goal in the 52nd minute against UNAM.

Cruz Azul dropped to third place after losing 2-1 at home against Guadalajara, which scored two times in the final 11 minutes.

Gerardo Zuniga scored for Cruz Azul in the 31st minute, but Guadalajara rallied late to snatch all three points with Aldo De Nigris leveling the match in the 79th before Marco Fabian's winner three minutes later.

Morelia is the only team in Liga MX without a win as the club lost 2-1 at home against Puebla, which got the winning goal in the 50th minute from Matias Alustiza, Atlas snuck past Santos, 1-0, with a goal from Arturo Gonzalez in the 85th minute, Edwin Cardona's tally in the 89th lifted Monterrey to a 2-1 win over Queretaro, Pachuca scored twice in the span of seven second-half minutes to win 2-1 over Leon and Jaguares topped Tigres, 1-0, with a first- half goal from Matias Vuoso.
