Beckham flies home to see seriously ill father

LONDON (Ticker) -- David Beckham's father has suffered a heart attack and the soccer star is flying back to the Britain on Thursday to be at his hospital bedside, his spokesman said.

The former England captain was seen boarding a flight in Los Angeles on Wednesday night after his father was taken ill. He is expected to arrive at Heathrow before lunchtime on Thursday.

His spokesman said his father, Ted, 59, was taken to Whipps Cross Hospital in Leytonstone, east London, on Wednesday night and then transferred to the to the London Chest Hospital in Bethnal Green, east London, overnight.

"I can confirm that he is at the London Chest Hospital and is in a stable condition," a spokesman for Barts and The London NHS Trust said.

"His father has had a heart attack and is currently being treated in hospital," Beckham's spokesman said. "David is flying back to be with him. Victoria is in Japan working but obviously she has been informed of it and she is concerned."

The Sun reported that Ted was taken by ambulance to the hospital after complaining of chest pains at his home in Chingford, east London, at 9:20 pm Wednesday night.

The newspaper's website said he suffered a heart attack and had to be resuscitate by paramedics in the ambulance on the way to hospital.

Beckham's father is also called David, but is known as Ted, which is short for his middle name, Edward.

He is divorced from David's mother, Sandra, with whom he also had a daughter named Joanne. In 2005, he published a book called "David Beckham: My Son."

His illness is a further blow for his son, whose Los Angeles Galaxy career and England comeback has been hampered by injury.
