Nine-man New England holds on for draw with DCU
May 24, 2015 - 1:37 AM Foxborough, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jairo Arrieta's goal in the 80th minute allowed D.C. United to salvage a 1-1 draw against the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium on Saturday as the Revs finished the match with nine men.Charlie Davies scored on the stroke of halftime to put the hosts in front, but things came apart for the Revs shortly after the restart as both Chris Tierney and Lee Nguyen were sent off in the span of six minutes.
New England was left to play the final 30 minutes with nine men, and United took advantage by snatching a point thanks to Arrieta's goal.
The result extends New England's home unbeaten streak in league play to 15 games, while United has lost just once in their last 10 games, keeping the club two points clear of the second-place Revs.
Neither side managed to put a shot on goal in the first half until just before the break when Juan Agudelo turned a header on goal that forced a save from United netminder Bill Hamid. However, Davies was on hand to poke home the rebound.
The visitors managed very little in the attacking third, but things opened up a bit when Tierney received a straight red card in the 52nd minute for a poor challenge on Chris Pontius.
Nguyen followed six minutes later with an elbow on Davy Arnaud that earned him a second yellow card and his team down two men.
But despite the numerical advantage, it wasn't until the 80th minute that United managed to put a shot on goal, although they made it count.
Substitute Taylor Kemp delivered a low cross to the near post that Arrieta turned home, denying the Revs three points.
