Socceroos lose Federici to knee injury
Feb 13, 2017 - 2:29 AM Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou remains hopeful that injured goalkeeper Adam Federici will travel to Russia for June's Confederations Cup despite a knee injury.Federici, 32, has been ruled out for the rest of his club season with English Premier League outfit Bournemouth after surgery.
Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe said Federici damaged cartilage in his right knee in a training incident.
"It's a real blow for us to lose Adam," Howe said.
"But knowing his character, he will dig deep and work hard to get back to fitness."
An injury report provided by the club to the national team boss has yet to rule Federici out of the Confederations Cup.
But he won't play any part in Australia's two World Cup qualifiers next month against Iraq and United Arab Emirates.
Federici has made four starts for the south coast-based club this season, establishing himself as No.2 goalkeeper behind experienced gloveman Artur Boruc.
Federici has become Australia's recognised No.2 in recent years, and is the only man aside from Mat Ryan to start between the sticks for the Socceroos since October 2014.
Mitchell Langerak is the other gloveman to be consistently called up by Postecoglou since 2015's Asian Cup triumph.
Swansea City reserve goalkeeper Mark Birighitti and Leyton Orient custodian Alex Cisak have also earned call-ups in the last 18 months, while Netherlands-based Brad Jones has enjoyed a stellar season.
Locally-based goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic, Danny Vukovic and Lawrence Thomas are also left-field options for Postecoglou, should he need them.
