Adelaide United's defensive revamp in ACL
Apr 24, 2017 - 7:46 AM Adelaide United are banking on a revamped defence to keep their Asian adventure alive. The Reds' defence has been shredded by suspension and injury for their away Asian Champions League clash with Japanese powers Gamba Osaka on Tuesday night.
Defensive stalwarts Dylan McGowan and Taylor Regan are out because of suspension while left-back Tarek Elrich has had a knee reconstruction.
"We have a few players suspended so we're going to have to change the team around," Adelaide winger Jordan O'Doherty said.
"We have been working on it this week in training so we'll just continue how we have been training.
"They are all very important players in our team. But there's lots of players to fill in and we have a bit of squad depth.
"Obviously there's going to have to be some young players that have to come in and do their job but we're very confident they will."
The absence of the defensive trio comes as Adelaide seek to advance through the group stage of the lucrative Asian tournament.
With two group games remaining, the Reds are in a scrap to progress: China's Jiangsu FC are assured of top spot with 12 points, followed by Adelaide (four points), Korea's Jeju United (four points) and Gamba (three points).
Adelaide sit in second spot due to their head-to-head record against Jeju - a home draw and an away victory.
But the Reds meet pacesetters Jiangsu in the last group game in Adelaide on May 9.
