Valeri, Dowie win Victory A-League awards
May 13, 2017 - 12:35 PM Melbourne Victory captain Carl Valeri has won the club's A-League player of the year award.The 32-year-old was voted as Victory's best performer through the 2016/17 campaign, which ended in a penalty shootout defeat to Sydney FC in last week's grand final.
Coach Kevin Muscat and assistant Jean-Paul de Marigny gave 3-2-1 votes for each Victory game.
Valeri's tally of 62 votes edged out James Troisi (55) and Marco Rojas (37) for the top prize.
The coaching pair deemed Valeri as Victory's best afield on 11 occasions through the 29-match season.
The playing group saw things differently, with Rojas handed the players' player of the year award.
Besart Berisha - who came fifth in the Victory Medal voting - won the club's golden boot.
English import Natasha Dowie won all three major awards for the club's W-League side.
Dowie was a shining light for Victory with nine goals despite a second-straight wooden spoon.
