WSW sign Bonevacia, Risdon and Thwaite
May 16, 2017 - 3:27 AM Western Sydney's latest new A-League look is taking shape with the arrival of gun trio Roly Bonevacia, Josh Risdon and Michael Thwaite.Less than a week after coach Tony Popovic announced the departure of eight players as part of his annual Blacktown purge, some of the missing pieces are slotting into place.
As expected, exciting former Wellington midfielder Bonevacia and Perth right-back Risdon have both signed with the Wanderers for two seasons.
They also welcome ex-Socceroos defender Thwaite, who has been without a club since leaving Chinese side Liaoning Whowin last transfer window, on a one-year deal.
Thwaite returns to the A-League for a ninth season following earlier stints with Melbourne Victory, Gold Coast and Perth Glory.
"It has a lot to do with the response from both ex-players and the current players at the Wanderers," said Thwaite, who started his career in the west with Marconi Stallions.
"I know Tony's very thorough and his success is proven so it's something that I'm very eager to be a part of.
"Western Sydney is a very important region for me because that's where my professional career started, so I feel that I need to give something back to the region."
The 34-year-old will provide stiff competition for fellow central defenders Jonathan Aspropotamitis and Robert Cornthwaite.
Three-time Socceroo Risdon will step straight into the right-back void left by Scott Neville, who went the other way to Glory on a three-year deal.
Further up the field will be Bonevacia, the exciting playmaker who opted for an experience with a bigger club than the Phoenix where he spent three seasons.
With Mitch Nichols gone, the 25-year-old Dutchman may be given the freedom to play higher again, where he excelled across the ditch before the arrival of Gui Finkler last campaign.
"I'm very excited to start a new challenge, it's something I'm really looking forward to," Bonevacia said.
