Meredith joins Millwall from Bradford City
May 30, 2017 - 1:17 AM Ten days after his Bradford City narrowly missed out on promotion to the English Championship, fringe Socceroos defender James Meredith has joined the club that delivered the heartbreak.Millwall announced early on Tuesday Meredith had signed a two-year deal and will start with The Lions on July 1, pending a medical when he returns from holiday next week.
It follows this month's League One play-off final between the sides at Wembley, where the 29-year-old left-back played for a long-desired promotion to the English second-tier only for Bradford to go down 1-0.
Meredith joined the Bantams from York City in 2012 and helped them gain promotion to League One the next year during more than 200 appearances for the club.
Bradford boss Stuart McCall was quick to offer a new contract after a season in which he was named in the League One PFA Team of the Year.
But Meredith, who earned two caps for Australia in 2015, said Millwall coach Neil Harris had been persuasive.
"I met Neil and he came across so well," he told the club's website.
"He's ambitious and has big plans both for the football club and for me as an individual, which is exactly what you want to hear and made Millwall the most attractive option for me."
Meredith joins a long line of Australians to ply their trade with Millwall including Tim Cahill, Kevin Muscat, Jason Van Blerk and Scott McDonald.
