Calver stays, Blackwood leaves Sydney FC
May 30, 2017 - 7:01 AM Up-and-coming Sydney FC defender Aaron Calver has been rewarded for his solid A-League form with a two-year contract extension, but young striker George Blackwood will move on.Calver returned from a long injury spell in January to prove himself as a strong backline performer whenever called upon.
Thrust straight back into the starting line-up for that month's scoreless Sydney derby, the 21-year-old held his own and went on to make five further appearances in the Sky Blues' record-breaking campaign.
Now, with the champions heading for a busy title defence including the Asian Champions League, the youth-team product is set for more minutes in his sixth professional season.
Calver was looking forward to continuing his central defensive development under coach Graham Arnold, who was glad to have him on board for the battle on two fronts.
"Aaron provides us with another option in defence which will be crucial during our dual A-League and Champions League campaigns," Arnold said.
"I'm looking forward to continuing to work with him."
While most of Arnold's squad have been quickly retained, the same can't be said for Blackwood.
The 19-year-old has left the club, released after making only two appearances this season and with little prospect of many more in a team featuring Brazilian marquee man Bobo at the head of the league's best attack.
Blackwood finished his Sydney career with a spirited shift on the right wing against Liverpool.
