Sydney FC re-sign Carney on one-year deal
Jun 13, 2017 - 8:00 AM Key bench weapon David Carney will stick around with Sydney FC next season to help the A-League champions defend their premiership-championship double. The veteran utility is one of the last of the Sky Blues' core squad to re-sign after committing to a one-year deal in a bid to stock up on more silverware.
"Our first aim will be to win the FFA Cup and ensure we hold all three Australian domestic trophies," Carney said.
"Winning the AFC Champions League is another huge ambition for myself and for Sydney FC.
"With the squad improving and becoming even more adept at playing alongside each other, we can have a real go at winning it this time."
Carney, who is now in line to contest his third Asian Champions League campaign with the club, was largely used off the bench last season and proved invaluable as an impact player.
Yet with only seven starts compared to 22 in 2015-16, there was a possibility the 33-year-old former Socceroo might have opted for more game time elsewhere while his body still allowed.
Arnold was delighted he'd decided to stay.
"David Carney was magnificent in helping us lift both trophies last season and will again be hugely important for us in defending those titles," Arnold said.
"He changed the game in the grand final and in a number of other games during the course of the campaign, and his flexibility will again be key as we compete in the ACL next year."
Sydney return to training in early July ahead of their friendly with Arsenal on July 13.
