Castro lures former roommate to Glory
Aug 9, 2017 - 1:40 AM Star Perth Glory import Diego Castro has been given the chance to rekindle an old partnership after convincing the A-League club to sign his former teammate Andreu Guerao on a one-year deal.Castro and Guerao played together at Spanish clubs Malaga and Sporting Gijon, before they went their separate ways.
But the former roommates will be reunited - in Australia of all places - and Glory hope the Spanish duo will help propel the club to greater heights.
Castro has been a star of the A-League over the past two years, only narrowly missing out on winning a second straight Johnny Warren Medal last season.
Guerao has featured in the A-League once before - for Western Sydney during their run to the grand final in 2015/16.
The 34-year-old midfielder scored three goals in 27 appearances, but was released by the Wanderers after that campaign.
Castro re-signed with Glory in May, and he played a key role in convincing the club to sign Guerao for the upcoming season.
Guerao is a product of Barcelona's La Masia academy, where he played alongside Lionel Messi in his hometown club's "C" and "B" teams.
Glory coach Kenny Lowe said Guerao's experience would be crucial in a youthful squad.
"He has great technical ability and composure on the ball, along with a superb range of passing that will enable him to link the team from back to front," Lowe said.
"In addition to having played with Diego in Spain, he was also a teammate of Liam Reddy, Scott Neville and Mitch Nichols at Western Sydney, and they have all spoken very highly of him not only as a very good footballer, but also as a top guy."
Glory were dealt a huge blow last month when skipper Rostyn Griffiths left the club in order to take up a lucrative deal to play in Uzbekistan.
