Roar's Maccarone needs early ball: Aloisi
Aug 28, 2017 - 11:03 PM Brisbane coach John Aloisi has urged his team to feed new marquee man Massimo Maccarone early ball as the A-League club starts to find some pre-season form. The 37-year-old Italian striker scored late from the penalty spot to earn the Roar a 2-1 win against the China under-22 side on the Gold Coast on Monday night.
Aside from a few silky touches, he struggled to get involved, despite playing the full 90 minutes against a fiery opposition.
The Roar have struggled in preseason and FFA Cup action so far this year, but Aloisi saw progress at CBus Super Stadium.
"Defensively we were a lot better, and better again in the second half in general," Aloisi said.
"We could hit Massimo a little earlier when we get the ball, because he can hold up the ball and link well.
"It was his second full game, and still getting his fitness and is a bit tired, bit heavy.
"He showed glimpses and probably didn't get enough of the ball."
The Roar scored first through Peter Skapetis, before Wei Shihao equalised soon after.
Tensions flared in a fiery second half, with Wei shown red after two bookable offences.
After dominating possession the Roar were awarded a penalty, but only after the use of the Video Assistant Referee.
"I'm sure we'll probably get a lot more penalties because people can't tug on shirts and hold like that," Aloisi said of the FIFA technology to be implemented this A-League season.
"I'm a fan; there's going to be decisions with a grey area and it won't go for you or be clear, but I'm pretty happy with it and it seems to be working well around the world."
Brisbane play another trial game against Melbourne Victory on Friday.
