Mooy back-tracks over post-match comments
Oct 11, 2017 - 4:31 PM Aaron Mooy has moved to shut down suggestions of a rift with Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou after he was dropped for the 2-1 win over Syria on Tuesday night.Postecoglou is reportedly set to resign after Australia's qualifying play-off against Honduras next month - regardless of whether the team makes it to a fourth consecutive World Cup or not.
The usually shy and reserved Mooy used social media on Wednesday night to head off any talk his omission from the starting line-up in Sydney might have had something to do with his decision.
The 27-year-old told reporters after the match he was "angry" at being left out by Postecoglou, who is said to have broken the news to Mooy at training by saying to him bluntly: "You're not playing."
An early injury to Brad Smith, however, meant ended up playing 110 minutes against Syria, and he had a key hand in the victory.
The Huddersfield Town midfielder tweeted that his post-match comments were "taken out of context" and not intended to be controversial.
"I was trying to simply make the point that I was disappointed to have not started the match and this is a natural feeling for all players," Mooy said.
Postecoglou has said he was "aware" of the speculation in a statement but did not confirm or deny it, giving rise to the widespread belief November's clashes against Honduras will be his last in charge of the Socceroos.
He is said to be keen to return to club coaching in Europe and an early departure would give him more time to search and settle into a suitable new job in time for next season.
