Arnold, Muscat in agreement for a change
Oct 14, 2017 - 2:23 AM Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold has finally found something he can agree on with his Melbourne Victory counterpart and old sparring partner Kevin Muscat. The mentors of the A-League's glamour clubs were Socceroos contemporaries in the 1990s, but as coaches have often traded barbs through the media.
But according to Arnold they agree the country should unite behind the Socceroos, and their coach Ange Postecoglou, ahead of next month's World Cup qualifing playoff against Honduras.
Postecoglou and his team have been criticised by various pundits and former Socceroos after Australia failed to qualify directly for next year's World Cup.
"For once, I think Kevin Muscat and me are on the same page, we both agree on something,"' Arnold said on Saturday.
"That is that the whole country needs to get behind the Socceroos and behind Ange because the game of football in this country, we need to qualify for the good of the game and there shouldn't be any negativity.
"Let's as a nation and as journalists and coaches and as players and as football fans get behind them and give them all the support that they need and get to ANZ (Stadium) for that return leg and get the boys over the line."
Postecoglou hasn't denied reports that he would resign after the games against Honduras, with Arnold widely tipped to be a leading candidate if that scenario eventuates.
Arnold, who coached the Socceroos in 2006-07, reiterated he wouldn't mind another crack at the job.
"One day, I'd like to do that," Arnold said.
"But that one day can be next month, or could be next year, it could be in 10 years.
"So I don't even think about it at the moment, it's all around winning with Sydney FC."
He said he hadn't been approached about any potential Socceroos coaching post vacancy and was focused on Sydney beating Wellington on Sunday.
"Ange will qualify Australia for the World Cup and until anything changes there's nothing to talk about," Arnold said.
