Jets look to ground Glory in A-League
Oct 14, 2017 - 4:57 AM Newcastle's exciting new-look attack will face a stiff examination on Sunday from a Perth side striving to avoid another fruitless A-League journey east. The Jets couldn''t have made better start to the season, winning 5-1 away to local rivals Central Cosst last week.
Conversely, Glory lost 2-1 away to Western Sydney Wanderers the following day.
Perth's prospects of taking away at least a point from Newcastle will hinge on their ability to contain the Jets potent attacking quartet,
Last season's leading Jets' scorer Andrew Nabbout has been joined by Venezuelan playmaker Ronald Vargas, Dimi Petratos and Roy O'Donovan.
Irishman O'Donovan grabbed a hat-trick last week with Nabbout providing two assists, Petratos scored a stunner and Vargas showed plenty of classy touches.
"They recruited well in the off-season, have a very lively front four that we'll need to be aware of and will obviously be full of confidence after that fantastic start," Perth coach Kenny Lowe said.
"But we'll back ourselves like we always do against every team that we play."
Jets coach Ernie Merrick is committed to maintaining the offence-minded approach that bore such dividends against the Mariners.
"I just want to see more of what we saw last week - front foot, attacking football from a talented bunch of players," Merrick said..
"We'll be continuing with an attacking mindset - we can't promise five goals each week."
Glory dominated the final half hour against the Wanderers after falling 2-0 behind.
"Perth are always a very tough team to play against and Ken has them well structured and organised," Merrick said..
"They'll play an aggressive brand of football with (Diego) Castro, (Adam) Taggart and (Andy) Keogh all dangerous in front of goal and they've recruited well in midfield with Xavi Torress and Andreu Guerao."
