Aloisi expects Ange to quit Socceroos job
Nov 15, 2017 - 11:42 PM John Aloisi expects Ange Postecoglou will quit as Socceroos coach despite sealing qualification for next year's World Cup in Russia.A close friend and protege of Postecoglou, Aloisi said he came to that view based on his comments after the 3-1 win over Honduras on Wednesday night.
An emotional Postecoglou was non-committal about his future, saying he would sit down with Football Federation Australia officials over the coming days to "bring it to a head" while also declaring he would always be an "outsider" in the sport.
Aloisi took that to mean he was leaving, just as an explosive report after the Syria play-offs last month predicted.
"That was my read last night and I (still) hold that view," he told reporters on Thursday.
"There's something that he's unhappy with - I don't know what, because he said that it has to come to a head.
"I don't know with who. But we'll see what decision he makes."
There remains no clear explanation as to why Postecoglou would want to pull the pin now, having finally reached the end of a long and arduous World Cup qualification path.
They got there by doing things his way, with the Socceroos a team moulded in his image of how the game should be played.
While there were plenty of nervy moments, Aloisi said Postecoglou had done everything asked of him since taking over the national team job just before the 2014 World Cup.
"For Australian football, I hope he stays," Aloisi said.
"I'd like to see him at another World Cup but he's obviously got his reasons to go or not to go.
"I'm sure in the next few days we'll hear more about it.
"His job was to qualify. He's done that. His job was to win the Asian Cup on home soil - he did that - and to blood young players into the national team, and he's done that.
"There's been hiccups along the road that a lot of people have commented on, he's been scrutinised but he's stayed strong and he's got what everyone wanted and that's to qualify for another World Cup."
Aloisi has previously said FFA should hire another Australian coach to steer the team in Russia should Postecoglou decide to move on.
But he said it was too early to say whether he would throw his hat into the ring.
"No one knows what Ange is going to do. It's something I haven't thought about," Aloisi said.
"I'm sure the FFA have got in mind what they want to do."
