Ryan can't imagine World Cup without Ange
Nov 16, 2017 - 2:57 AM Socceroos goalkeeper Mat Ryan still can't imagine going to next year's World Cup without Ange Postecoglou, even as the coach dropped the heaviest hints yet he will walk.Ryan insisted the players were none the wiser as to Postecoglou's future after a month of intense speculation the 52-year-old would leave his post even if Australia qualified, as they did on Wednesday night via a 3-1 win over Honduras.
"He hasn't addressed us as a group, just obviously celebrations and enjoying it all," the Brighton shot-stopper said at the Socceroos' celebrations in Sydney on Thursday.
"It's just as it's been at every other camp, we're all one family so I don't see any of that changing.
"It's a funny question - he's our coach still so there's no reason to think why he wouldn't be.
"... Until someone from FFA or he himself let's us know otherwise, we're going to see him in March hopefully."
That appears less likely every time Postecoglou speaks to the media.
On Thursday when asked why he'd want to leave now that the hard part was over, Postecoglou responded: "Maybe it's the hard parts that appeal to me".
If Postecoglou does decide to call it a day, Football Federation Australia need to move fast to install his successor.
"It obviously has to happen fairly quickly because I'm mindful of the fact there's a lot of planning that needs to go (into) moving forward," Postecoglou said.
"It's not about me trying to keep everyone in suspense.
"I'll have those discussions with David (Gallop) and Steven (Lowy) in the next couple of weeks and it'll be resolved.
"Nothing will detract from what I've experienced over the last four years - it's been an amazing ride and I've loved every minute of it."
Ryan was one of a small handful of the current squad to have played in Brazil 2014, and said improvements since then had been immeasurable.
"This time, after earning the right ourselves and from our experience at Brazil, we're going to appreciate it that much more," Ryan said.
"The progress we've made ... we're such a better team since then."
