Ange put us on path to success: Socceroos
Nov 21, 2017 - 11:11 PM Ange Postecoglou made his Socceroos believe, with the departed coach lauded by his pupils for guiding the side to a path to success.Postecoglou announced on Wednesday he was standing down, a week after ensuring Australia qualified for a fourth successive World Cup with victory over Honduras in a two-leg playoff.
"His leadership and beliefs are infectious and I'm proud that I had the chance to share his journey with him and witness his love for our country," star striker Tim Cahill said on Instagram.
"The most important part was the belief he instilled in us to play a style of football that could test any team we came up against.
"This for me sets Ange apart as someone who stayed strong to his values of changing the game in Australia."
Defender Trent Sainsbury said he will never forget Postecoglou's contribution to his career.
"Just want to say thanks to Ange for everything he has done for football in Australia and me personally," Sainsbury tweeted.
"He gave me my shot with the national team and I can never forget that.
"The belief and confidence he's instilled in this team that will keep us on the path to great things."
Rising defender Brad Smith and former Socceroo Jason Davison, who played in Australia's 2015 Asian Cup title, also paid tribute.
"To play in a World Cup and to win the Asian cup on home soil is something I will cherish and never forget! You always believed in us," Europe-based Davison said on Twitter.
Bournemouth player Smith said Postecoglou "changed the way people look at Australians playing football".
Postecoglou replaced the sacked Holger Osieck as Australian coach in late 2013 and took the national team to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
"I just have an instinct, I think it's the right time for me, the right time for the organisation," Postecoglou said at a media conference in Sydney on Wednesday.
"And that, as tough a decision as it is for me, it feels like the right time.
"I have loved this job but it's been all-encompassing, and it hasn't just been coaching the national team -- the part I love is the coaching.
"I think I'll have a sense of unfinished business but that might have been there whenever I left."
