2022 Player Profiles: Sergio Cordova
Jan 3, 2023 - 5:15 PMSergio Cordova came to RSL via the relationship of mutual ownership with Augsburg in Germany. He was a promising young player that had done extremely well in youth international competition and needed a bit of a refresh scoring just seven goals in three years at Augsburg.
RSL offered him that opportunity and took a calculated risk on the 6’2” forward. He took a while to acclimate to RSL, Major League Soccer, and the United States. He had a few sporadic goals but his body language often showed discontentment or frustration. The dynamic he was starting to form with Bobby Wood changed things as well when Wood went out for the season due to injury.
Cordova very much operated off of momentum. If he did not find the back of the net, it felt like he went into a slump for a while. Once he scored a goal, his whole demeanor changed and he would be in a good run of form until he would miss a wide open opportunity. It was a very up-and-down season for him with him peaking right toward the end of the campaign.
What’s next for Sergio Cordova?
Cordova lacked consistency form most of 2022 and could really use a stable situation to get his career on the right path.
By all accounts, it looks like Cordova will not be back with RSL in 2023. Things change quickly, but as of now, don’t expect him at America First Field.
If, somehow, RSL were able to secure him at the right price point then they should absolutely do it. But right now, all signs point to Cordova wearing another kit in 2023.
