Hanescu, Wawrinka out in 2nd round at Swiss Open

Jul 30, 2009 - 6:20 PM GSTAAD, Switzerland(AP) -- Top-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka was eliminated in the second round of the Swiss Open on Thursday, losing 6-4, 6-4 to Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil.

Defending champion Victor Hanescu also exited, retiring with a stomach illness after losing the opening set against Florent Serra of France.

The 21-year-old Bellucci broke Wawrinka's serve once in each set and never faced a break point. He converted his first match point when the Swiss sent a looping backhand long after 1 hour, 14 minutes.

The defeat sealed a tough week for 24-year-old Wawrinka. He dropped out of the top 20 in the world rankings Monday for the first time since leaping into the top 10 in May last year, when he reached the final of the Rome Masters.

The 119th-ranked Bellucci faces Nicolas Kiefer in the quarterfinals. The sixth-seeded German beat Ivan Navarro of Spain 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-2.

Serra will play Marcos Daniel in the quarterfinals, after the Brazilian beat Julien Benneteau of France 6-3, 7-6 (8) in the opening match Thursday.
