Groenefeld stunned by qualifier at Fortis Championships

Sep 26, 2006 - 3:24 PM LUXEMBOURG (Ticker) - Last year, Anna-Lena Groenefeld lost in the final of the Fortis Championships to Kim Clijsters. This year, she lost much earlier - and to a much less accomplished opponent.

The fifth seed from Germany, Groenefeld was stunned by Italian qualifier Karin Knapp, 6-0, 6-4, on Tuesday in the first round of the $600,000 Tier II event.

Knapp is ranked just 134th in the world, while Groenefeld is 17th.

The only other seeds in action Tuesday are No. 5 Francesca Schiavone of Italy and No. 8 Mary Pierce of France. Schiavone takes on Dutch player Michaella Krajicek, while Pierce faces Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko.

Early winners were Nathalie Dechy of France and American Chanda Rubin. Dechy will face second-seeded Russian Nadia Petrova in the second round and Rubin will take on No. 3 Patty Schnyder of Switzerland.

Clijsters is not entered due to a wrist injury.
