Melzer advances to quarterfinals at Thailand Open

Sep 30, 2009 - 5:33 PM BANGKOK(AP) -- Jurgen Melzer of Austria defeated Turkish qualifier Marsel Ilhan 6-4, 6-2 Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Thailand Open.

The 44th-ranked Melzer broke his opponent once in each set, using his superior baseline game to overcome the 174th-ranked Ilhan.

Melzer will play the winner between Donald Young of the United States and Andreas Beck of Germany.

Fourth-seeded Viktor Troicki of Serbia also advanced, beating 61st-ranked Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil 6-3, 7-6 (4). He will next play the winner between American John Isner and Germany's Mischa Zverev.

In first-round matches, Kevin Kim of the United States beat Rainer Schuettler of Germany 6-4, 6-4, and Zverev rallied for a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Leonardo Mayer of Argentina.

Thailand's Paradorn Srichaphan, who returned to the ATP tour after a wrist injury, teamed with Danai Udomchoke in a loss to Michael Kohlmann and Alexander Peya 6-2, 1-6, 10-6.

"I feel good to come back and it doesn't seem like I was away for two and a half years," Paradorn said. "I decided to play just a few days before the tournament because I didn't feel the pain anymore."
