Costa released from hospital after heart problems

Dec 10, 2009 - 9:31 PM BARCELONA, Spain(AP) -- Spain Davis Cup captain and former French Open winner Albert Costa was released from a hospital after experiencing heart problems on Thursday.

The 34-year-old Costa was admitted to a hospital near Barcelona after complaining of heart palpitations, chest pains and hypertension, the Spanish tennis federation said. He was released hours later and was at home resting.

Costa has no history of heart problems, said federation spokesman Pedro Hernandez, who put the episode down to stress.

In his first year as captain, Costa led Spain to its fourth Davis Cup title with a 5-0 sweep of the Czech Republic last Sunday. After the victory, he said he would soon sit down with the federation to discuss his contract renewal.

Costa replaced Emilio Sanchez Vicario after last year's triumph over Argentina.

He also works as sporting director of the Catalan tennis federation and was expected to be at the national tennis championships in Seville as tournament director beginning Friday, but that now seems unlikely.

Costa played for Spain's first Davis Cup-winning team in 2000. He won the French Open two years later.
