Santangelo wins, Mirza upset at Sony Ericsson

Feb 16, 2007 - 4:28 PM BANGALORE, India (Ticker) -- Mara Santangelo is within two wins of another title at the $175,000 Sony Ericsson International.

The top-seeded Santangelo advanced to the semifinals at the Tier III event Friday with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Yurika Sema of Japan.

Santangelo, who won her lone career title at this event last year, had a much easier time in the quarters than in the second round. The Italian needed three sets to beat Akgul Amanmuradova on Thursday.

But Santangelo cruised against Sema, setting up a semifinal showdown against unseeded Olga Savchuk of the Ukraine.

The 19-year Savchuk, who entered this event with an 0-5 record this year, posted the biggest win of her career Friday, a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over fourth-seeded Jelena Kostanic Tosic of Croatia.

Unseeded Yaroslava Shvedova of Russia spoiled things for the home fans by knocking off second-seeded Sania Mirza, 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 6-4.

In the other semifinal, Shvedova will take on Israeli Tzipora Obziler, a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) winner over Melinda Czink of Hungary. First prize is $25,840.
