Mauresmo withdraws from Porsche Tennis Grand Prix

Oct 5, 2006 - 7:16 PM STUTTGART, Germany (Ticker) -- A shoulder injury will prevent Amelie Mauresmo from attempting to win a fifth title of the season.

The top seed from France withdrew from the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix on Thursday.

The reigning Australian Open and Wimbledon champion, Mauresmo was replaced in the draw by American lucky loser Lisa Raymond, who lost to Dutch player Michaella Krajicek, 6-4, 6-2.

Krajicek will face Tatiana Golovin of France, a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Czech lucky loser Iveta Benesova, in the quarterfinals. Benesova had replaced Ana Ivanovic (shoulder) in the draw.

Dinara Safina's first tournament since entering the top 10 also ended prematurely.

The sixth seed from Russia, Safina was routed by Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova, 6-2, 6-2, in the second round of the $650,000 Tier II event.

On Monday, Safina moved to a career-best 10th in the world rankings.

Hantuchova awaits either another Russian, No. 4 Nadia Petrova, or Germany Anna-Lena Groenefeld in the round of eight.

Fifth seed Patty Schnyder edged Shahar Peer of Israel, 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 6-4, to set up a quarterfinal meeting with third-seeded Russian Elena Dementieva.
