Gasquet, Mathieu advance to quarterfinals at Gstaad

Jul 12, 2007 - 5:01 PM GSTAAD, Switzerland (Ticker) -- Another seeded player was eliminated on Thursday at the $575,000 Allainz Suisse Open, but Frenchmen Richard Gasquet and Paul-Henri Mathieu moved on.

Gasquet, the tournament's reigning champion, defeated Belgian Kristof Vliegen, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the quarterfinals of the the claycourt event.

Up next for Gasquet is Russia's Igor Andreev, who upset No. 8 Potito Starace of Italy, 6-3, 7-5. Starace was the latest seeded casualty after the top two seeds, Russia's Nikolay Davydenko and Mikhail Youzhny, along with No. 4 Phillipp Kohlschreiber of Germany, were upset on Wednesday.

Joining Gasquet in the quarterfinals is the fifth-seeded Mathieu who needed a third-set tiebreaker to edge 2006 finalist Feliciano Lopez of Spain, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).

Mathieu will meet fellow frenchman Gael Monfils in the quarterfinals. Monfils advanced with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Czech Jiri Vanek.

Italy's Andreas Seppi and Argentina's Martin Vassallo Arguello each won on Thursday and will square off in the quarterfinals.

Seppi advanced by outlasting Austria's Stefan Koubek, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (10-8).

Vassallo Arguello also needed three sets to dispatch Ecuador's Nicolas Lapentti, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

Sixth-seeded Marc Gicquel of France meets Czech Radek Stepanek in the other quarterfinal match.

First prize is nearly $80,000.
