Gonzalez saves six match points Thursday at Swiss Indoors

Oct 26, 2006 - 1:35 PM BASEL, Switzerland (Ticker) - Fernando Gonzalez is playing every point with utmost urgency in his quest to reach the Tennis Masters Cup.

The third seed from Chile, Gonzalez saved six match points in a 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 7-6 (10-8) triumph over American Mardy Fish to book a spot in the quarterfinals of the Davidoff Swiss Indoors on Thursday.

Gonzalez entered the event in ninth place in qualifying for the eight-man year-end event in Shanghai. With each victory, he is gaining ground on eighth-place Spaniard Tommy Robredo, who lost in the first round at St. Petersburg, Russia on Tuesday.

Gonzalez will play either a wild card in the round of eight Friday, either Argentine Juan Martin del Potro or George Bastl of Switzerland.

Also in the bottom half of the draw at this $1.073 million tournament, second-seeded Argentine David Nalbandian will play Spaniard Feliciano Lopez and British veteran Tim Henman will take on local favorite Stanislas Wawrinka.

Top seed Roger Federer, who never has won his hometown event, will face Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, with the winner to play either No. 5 David Ferrer of Spain or Czech Jiri Novak.

Seventh seed Jose Acasuso of Argentina posted a 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 win over German Philipp Kohlschreiber. He awaits either countryman Juan Ignacio Chela or Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand in the quarterfinals.
