Vaidisova advances at Gold Coast

Jan 1, 2008 - 10:03 AM GOLD COAST, Australia (Ticker) - Top-seed Nicole Vaidisova survived an early scare at the $175, 000 Austrailian Women's Hardcourts tournament.

After dropping the first set, the 18-year-old Czech won the next two over Casey Dellacqua to advance past the opening round Tuesday.

Vaidisova, the World's 12-ranked player, defeated Dellacqua of Austrialia, 5-7, 7-5, 6-0. She is looking for her seventh career singles win and first since Strasbourg in 2006.

No. 7 Sybille Bammer was not fortunate enough to avoid a first round upset. The Austrailian lefthander was upset by Na Li of China, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, in a first-round matchup.

In the only other meeting between the two, Li was defeated by Bammer in the 2007 French Open.

Bammer was not the only seeded player to get ousted in the first round as second-seeded Nadia Petrova of Russia and No. 8 Agnes Szavay were both upset Monday.

Victoria Azarenka of Belarus became the first player to advance to the third round, besting Ukrainian Yuliana Fedak, 6-4, 6-2, in the second.

Also advancing to the second round Monday was Dominika Cibulkova, Julia Schruff, Tatjana Malek and Flavia Pennetta. The matchup between Monique Adamczak and Elena Vesnina is still yet to finish.

First prize is $28,000.
