While the men’s side of Wimbledon is basically a three-horse race, the women’s draw is wide open. So much intrigue and unpredictability surrounds the women’s tournament.

Serena Williams is a total mystery, given how rarely she has played this year and given how many health problems she has endured. There’s Naomi Osaka, who won the Australian Open earlier this year, but is just 5-3 in her last eight matches. Angelique Kerber could also be a threat but she hasn’t been to an event final since the middle of March. And there’s Karolina Pliskova, who is the No. 3 player in the world, but she’s never won a major and has only been to a final once.

With the draw so wide open, who are the best bets?

The World No. 1 player and top seed is the best choice if you want to go to the top tier of the betting favorites for Wimbledon. Petra Kvitova has won Wimbledon twice but hasn’t made the semifinals since her win in 2014. Kvitova’s health has also been a source of uncertainty for her in recent weeks as she wasn’t able to play her normal grass-season schedule after she withdrew from the French Open. If Serena and Kvitova are both dogged by health questions, that leaves Barty as the player who should be expected to go all the way.

Barty is 36-5 this season and is currently on a 12-match winning streak, having won Roland Garros and then the Birmingham title this past week. All parts of her game are firing and now she’s on a grass court where she is very comfortable.

The tournament is set up for her to win, even though the draw has not yet been released and could possibly be tough. Barty is probably better equipped to deal with tough opponents than the others at the top end of the betting odds list.

Best Mid-Range Flier: Sloane Stephens

If you want to get a player with a price lower than +1500 and higher than +3500, Sloane Stephens fits really well. She plays great defense and plays low to the ground, which means she can handle the low, skidding shots on slick grass. She can hit the ball with power when she wants to but she doesn’t overdo it. She recently joined tennis coach Sven Groeneveld, one of the better and more respected coaches in the business, so she looks like a player on the rise.

Stephens made the quarterfinals of Roland Garros and had a solid tournament there. If she carries what she did in Paris over to the All-England Club, she will certainly have a good chance to win this tournament.

For our long-shot – a player with a very low price who might be able to make a title run – it’s Venus Williams. She led Barty 4-1 in the first set in Birmingham last week before Barty regrouped and won five straight games to take the first set, 6-4, and eventually win the match. That goes to show you that Venus – on a good day – can still compete with the best players on the circuit.

Venus is one of the greatest grass-court players of all time. The surface is made for her fluid strokes and her ability to cover large amounts of the court with long strides. If Venus gets the right draw, she could make a run.
