2022 French Open Betting Guide: Preview, Odds, & Picks

May 20, 2022 - 12:23 AM

The French Open, or Roland-Garros, begins on Sunday, May 22nd, at Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France. The men’s defending champion is controversial superstar Novak Djokovic, who broke a streak of four straight titles for Spain’s Rafael Nadal. On the Women’s side, Barbora Krejcikova won her first French Open title in 2021, and there has been much more variation in the winner, with eight different winners in each of the last eight tournaments.

Here are the three picks that I will be playing:

Men’s Picks:

Carlos Alcaraz (+200) – The next big thing is here now and poised to take home his first trophy on the clay of Roland-Garros. Among all ATP players, Carlos Alcaraz has weathered the most challenging schedule of anyone on tour and has shown that he is in the best form in the world right now. The 19-year-old has ascended to be a truly elite player on all surfaces, but clay is where he stands out. Look for him to not mess around in the early rounds, and have higher lines than you have ever seen for him because he is going into a major tournament as a co-favorite with Novak Djokovic at +175. This is a great value that I think is worth paying for the likely champion.

Stefanos Tsitsipas (+450) – Diving into analytics led me to find some real value in backing the 23-year-old Greek player, as he grades out to be the best player on clay in the entire world. He has played a tough schedule, but not as tough as Alcaraz, who I am praying Tsitsipas will make it to the final to showcase just how good he is on clay. Tennis deserves this moment for the young stars, and I would not be surprised to see multiple tiebreaks and a true coin-toss of a match. Great value.

Casper Ruud (+2000) – One of my favorite players to watch comes in as an underrespected player at 20/1. I believe he has the skill to hang with anyone on this surface, and he is rolling through Geneva, so he will be ready to go for this tournament. He has climbed to number eight in the world rankings, with a title under his belt. While this is my favorite of the longshots, he is refined and poised to at least make a run at the title here.

Women’s Picks:

Iga Swiatek (-100) – How can you not choose the clear favorite? With ten times shorter odds than any of her opponents, the experience as the 2020 Champion makes this play a no-brainer. She is far and wide the best player in the world, and her only real competition at this point retired last year in the form of Ashleigh Barty. She is immensely better than her opponents on clay, and I look for her to absolutely dominate her way to her second title in three years.

Ons Jabeur (+1200) – The only other player with any sort of value is Jabeur. The fact that she is listed behind Halep makes for fantastic value if you don’t think Swiatek wins for whatever reason, as she is strong on clay and the next best player in the world.
