2022 Wimbledon: Matteo Berrettini Betting Odds, Preview & Prediction

Jun 24, 2022 - 6:55 PM

Rafael Nadal is halfway to the calendar Grand Slam after winning the first two of the season, the Australian Open and French Open. However, considering just two men have ever won the calendar Grand Slam (Don Budge in 1938 and Rod Laver in 1962 and 1969), the odds are stacked against him, making things feel wide open entering Wimbledon.

Perhaps things are not that wide open, considering Novak Djokovic has won each of the last three Wimbledon titles. Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Andy Murray have combined to win the previous ten Wimbledon titles. However, Federer will not play the tournament for the first time in more than two decades, and Murray is a shell of himself from the 2013 and 2016 titles now at age 35.

In addition to Federer’s profound absence, Wimbledon will also be played without world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev or Andrey Rublev on the Men’s side, as Wimbledon has banned all players from Russia and Belarus due to the ongoing war in the Ukraine. Lastly, world No. 2 Alexander Zverev’s absence will be felt, as he remains sidelined after undergoing surgery for an ankle injury he suffered at the French Open. As a result, this is the first time since the ATP started ranking players that the top two players would miss Wimbledon.

This is the first annual BettingPros Guide to Wimbledon, where we will highlight several of the top contenders from both the Men’s and Women’s Draws.

Without the world’s top two ranked players, is Djokovic a shoo-in for his fourth consecutive and seventh career Wimbledon title? Will Nadal keep his quest for the calendar Grand Slam alive? What longer shot is best positioned to make a run and claim their first Wimbledon championship?

Read on for our thoughts and predictions for Matteo Berrettini at Wimbledon 2022.

Matteo Berrettini Wimbledon History

As the No. 7 seed last year, Berrettini made it to the finals against No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic. Berrettini won a first-set tiebreak, but Djokovic proceeded to win the following three sets 6-4, 6-4, 6-3. Berrettini had dropped just three sets en route to his finals appearance, and his two most significant wins in that run were against Hubert Hurkacz and Felix Auger-Aliassime. Berrettini enters this year 10-3 at Wimbledon.

Matteo Berrettini Recent Form

Berrettini is one of the few men’s players that competed in not one but two tournaments after the French Open leading up to Wimbledon. Berrettini’s legs were fresher after sitting out the French Open with a hand injury. Nevertheless, his last two wins in Stuttgart and London have vaulted him ahead of Rafael Nadal as the second-shortest favorite on the Wimbledon odds board behind Djokovic. Berrettini became the eighth man to defend his Queen’s Cup title successfully and has won nine consecutive matches on grass. In fact, his loss in last year’s Wimbledon final to Djokovic is his only loss on grass in the previous 21 matches, and the Italian is 32-3 on grass since 2019.

Matteo Berrettini Wimbledon Predictions

The Pick: Berrettini to Win His Quarter (+110 on DraftKings)

Berrettini has made ten ATP finals, five of which have come on grass. In addition, four of his seven titles have now come on grass courts, as his big serve and smashing forehand are massive weapons on the surface. Berrettini is clearly confident heading into Wimbledon, saying that he is “going to be more ready” if he meets Djokovic again this year. Given his big serve and strong baseline game, we like for the Italian to win his quarter and get back to the finals once again, where he would be favored over any player not named Djokovic.
