2022 Wimbledon: Novak Djokovic Betting Odds, Preview & Prediction

Jun 24, 2022 - 6:53 PM

Rafael Nadal is halfway to the calendar Grand Slam after winning the first two of the season, the Australian Open and French Open. However, considering just two men have ever won the calendar Grand Slam (Don Budge in 1938 and Rod Laver in 1962 and 1969), the odds are stacked against him, making things feel wide open entering Wimbledon.

Perhaps things are not that wide open, considering Novak Djokovic has won each of the last three Wimbledon titles. Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Andy Murray have combined to win the previous ten Wimbledon titles. However, Federer will not play the tournament for the first time in more than two decades, and Murray is a shell of himself from the 2013 and 2016 titles now at age 35.

In addition to Federer’s profound absence, Wimbledon will also be played without world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev or Andrey Rublev on the Men’s side, as Wimbledon has banned all players from Russia and Belarus due to the ongoing war in the Ukraine. Lastly, world No. 2 Alexander Zverev’s absence will be felt, as he remains sidelined after undergoing surgery for an ankle injury he suffered at the French Open. As a result, this is the first time since the ATP started ranking players that the top two players would miss Wimbledon.

This is the first annual BettingPros Guide to Wimbledon, where we will highlight several of the top contenders from both the Men’s and Women’s Draws.

Without the world’s top two ranked players, is Djokovic a shoo-in for his fourth consecutive and seventh career Wimbledon title? Will Nadal keep his quest for the calendar Grand Slam alive? What longer shot is best positioned to make a run and claim their first Wimbledon championship?

Read on for our thoughts and predictions for Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon 2022.

Novak Djokovic Wimbledon History

With a win this year, Djokovic would join Roger Federer, Pete Sampras, and Bjorn Borg as the only Men’s players in the Open Era to win four consecutive Wimbledon titles. Djokovic would also move into a second-place tie with Sampras and William Renshaw with seven overall Wimbledon titles, which is one shy of Federer’s record eight. However, more importantly for Djokovic, a win would move him into sole possession of second place on the all-time Grand Slam wins list with 21, one shy of Nadal’s 22.

Novak Djokovic Recent Form

Like many other players, Djokovic chose not to enter any tournaments between the French Open and Wimbledon with just three short weeks to prepare. Though Djokovic would have preferred a deeper run at Roland Garros, an unlucky draw got the best of him, as he had no business meeting Nadal, the greatest clay-court player ever to play, in the quarterfinals. Djokovic won in Rome the tournament before the French Open, which helped him overcome a poor 9-4 start to 2022.

Novak Djokovic Wimbledon Predictions

The Pick: Djokovic to Win (-120 on DraftKings)

We are generally not in the business of laying such hefty pre-tournament odds on any player, but we cannot find a Men’s player in a weakened field that can beat Djokovic three out of five sets on grass. Djokovic has a straightforward path to the quarterfinals, where he could meet Carlos Alcaraz. Alcaraz defeated Djokovic earlier this year on clay in Madrid, but the young Spaniard is not a proven grass-court player. From there, Djokovic could meet Casper Ruud (who has not won a match at Wimbledon) in the semifinals or Hubert Hurkacz, and the young Pole has made just one semifinal appearance in a Grand Slam (albeit at Wimbledon) in his young career.

Djokovic’s most likely test will be either against Nadal or Berrettini in the finals. However, since Djokovic is 3-1 on grass against Nadal and 3-0 head-to-head overall against Berrettini, we would not expect him to be upset in the final.
