How to Bet Major Tennis Tournaments at a Sportsbook

Jul 7, 2022 - 10:17 AM

Tennis is being played at a higher level than ever before. With harder serves, incredible spin on the balls, and significantly more athletic people playing, it is a true joy to watch. With COVID-19 restrictions slowly but surely lifting, we are back to a typical calendar year for the Grand Slam Tournaments and are excited to see these players continue to work towards their dreams of sweeping these events.

In terms of betting, there are a ton more options than ever before, but we will keep it simple and talk about outright winners and why this is the only bet you can bet months on months before. Aside from futures, that I spoke about in a previous piece, here is how I try to approach major tennis tournaments.

Court History

An underrated factor that sometimes gets overlooked is that some players just flat out dominate at certain courts, like Rafael Nadal at Roland-Garros in Paris, France. He won his 14th title on that court, which extended his record for most championships at the French Open of all time. Yet he had the fourth shortest odds. Sometimes, I feel like books try to place certain players behind others to make people overthink what they are putting their money into, almost creating a reverse of the average gambler’s fallacy.

Court Surface

In betting Major tournaments, the surface is always the first thing that I look at, as there are players who vary incredibly by what they play on. The best way to strategize for this is to parlay favorites in the opening rounds and play a couple of underdogs straight. There will be upsets, but you must research to avoid seeing these come to light.

Later Tournament Round Strategy

Once the final 16 is revealed, there should be a few opportunities to find talented players in pick ’em scenarios where, if the matchup provides; you can get rare lines on certain players that you may not have wanted to pay for in the past.

As we get to the quarter-finals and beyond, I try to bet the OVER on 9.5 games for the first set. I believe that the players come into this with the mindset of not making the big mistakes and chase things other than the process that you trained for over the last few months.

By this point, the players are showing their weaknesses, but are overpowering with their strengths. Both players are in top form, ready to put on a show for spectators. I wouldn’t pivot too far from the money line in the final match. I try to have the same goals as the player I am invested in, as they just want the championship by doing whatever it takes.
