Thompson leads Sparks over ShockAug 15, 2010 - 3:13 AM TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- Tina Thompson had 24 points and 10 rebounds and the Los Angeles Sparks held off the Tulsa Shock for a 92-87 victory Saturday night.
Tulsa drew within 85-82 on a three-point play by Ivory Latta with 1:09 left. Thompson made two free throws after getting fouled while grabbing an offensive rebound with 51.3 seconds remaining.
"Early on, they were just giving me a lot of good looks at the basket," Thompson said. "I don't know if that was there defensive scheme or not, but I got a lot of one-on-one. I made a lot of shots early on, and as far rebounds, just playing aggressive."
Los Angeles (12-19) sealed the win when DeLisha Milton-Jones made a layup with 6.6 seconds left.
Milton-Jones scored 20 points for the Sparks, while Noelle Quinn had 19 and Marie Ferdinand-Harris 10.
Latta had 26 points for the Shock (5-26), while Tiffany Jackson had 11 points and 13 rebounds. Nicole Ohlde added 16 points and Shanna Crossley had 13.
"To me, the warrior of the game was Tiffany Jackson," Tulsa coach Nolan Richardson said. "She is what we got to have. She guarded people, she rebounded, she was the spark-plug of what brought us back and gave us a chance."
Latta hit two 3-pointers late in the third quarter to get Tulsa within 69-61. Former Olympian Marion Jones converted an offensive rebound but could not make the free throw for a three-point play. Latta hit a free throw to make it a five-point game.
Los Angeles, which led 54-39 at halftime, answered as former Oklahoma State star and rookie Andrea Riley hit a 3 before the period ended to make it 72-64.
The Sparks scored the next five points before Tulsa started another run - a 12-4 spurt that made it 81-76 on Ohlde's layup with 3:12 left.
Tulsa's Chante Black jammed her thumb in the game and is listed as questionable.
