Taurasi, Taylor lead Mercury past Fever

Jun 28, 2014 - 1:34 AM Indianapolis, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - The Phoenix Mercury got 43 points from its starting backcourt in Friday's 81-76 win over the Indiana Fever.

Diana Taurasi poured in a game-high 23 points, including 11-for-11 from the free throw line, and Penny Taylor scored 20 for Phoenix, winners in four straight games. Brittney Griner, coming off a career-high 28 points, netted just four but blocked six shots to anchor Phoenix's defense.

The Mercury trailed by as many as 13 points in the third quarter and had to play from behind in the fourth to escape Bankers Life Fieldhouse with a win.

Indiana's lead was 65-59 with 7:48 to play following Erlana Larkins' layup, but Taylor came back and split a pair of free throws and added a three-point play around DeWanna Bonner's transition layup to tie the score.

Phoenix led by four in the final minute when Shavonte Zellous drew a foul shooting from behind the arc and made all three ensuing free throws to cut Indiana's deficit to one. Taurasi put the game away though, canning a 3- pointer with 22.9 seconds to play.

Zellous scored 18 points to pace the Fever.
