Toliver's late 3-pointer lifts Sparks past Sun
Aug 3, 2014 - 9:50 PM Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Kristi Toliver capped a wild sequence with an off-balance 3-pointer in the final seconds, and the Los Angeles Sparks held on to beat the Connecticut Sun, 70-69, on Sunday. The Sparks trailed by four with 20 seconds remaining when Toliver missed a triple from the left wing. Candace Parker secured the offensive rebound and put it back in with a lefty hook to cut the deficit in half.
Nneka Ogwumike then jumped in front of the inbounds pass and saved it to Candice Wiggins, who found Toliver at the top of the key. A subtle head fake got two defenders off balance, and Toliver stepped into a 3 and hit nothing but nylon with 9.6 seconds to play. It was her only basket of the game.
Renee Montgomery took the clock down on the other end and missed a deep 2- pointer off the back rim. Ogwumike grabbed the rebound as the clock hit zero.
Alana Beard led LA with 18 points and Ogwumike, battling against her younger sister, scored 17 points with 10 rebounds.
Chiney Ogwumike outplayed her sister despite the loss, totaling 23 points and 13 boards.
